Anderson (1922-2017) was a Republican member of Congress from Rockford, Illinois, from 1961 to 1981 and initially sought the GOP nomination for president, later taking up the independent mantel. He made history by becoming the first independent candidate (non-major party) to earn a spot on the ballot in all 50 states. In the general election, he earned 7% of the vote, but won no states against incumbent Democratic President Jimmy Carter and the eventual winner, Republican Ronald Reagan.
