Description: Now hard to find complete issue of Chicago's notable Poetry magazine for May 1979 is in like new condition. Faint "duplicate" stamp to top edge of cover. No other markings. The monthly is edited at this date by John Frederick Nims. This is a "First Appearance Number." See photos #2-3 for complete contents. See photo #5 (back cover) for some lines of verse following the passing of poet and author Allen Tate. Some highlights (all first appearances in the monthly) I find here include: Four poems by the now late poet and, at this date, future short story writer and novelist Denis Johnson (age 29), who is described here as an educated "clerk-typist." Johnson won the National Book Award for his novel Tree of Smoke in 2007, among other literary awards. A poem (10 stanzas) by Paul Breslin, Meditations on the Field Museum (Chicago), opens this issue. Breslin also reviews new books of poetry in this number. See photo #4. Other first-time contributors here include poems by Charles Baxter (who would review the last stories of Denis Johnson, who died in 2017, for the New York Review of Books in 2018), Diana O'Hehir, Dave Etter, James Nowlan, Joy Gwillim, Margaret Kent, and others.
