Additional Information One year after his passing, this captivating image of the iconic Russian composer and pianist Dmitri Shostakovich, with its unique style and distinctive aesthetic, serves as a powerful testament to his artistic legacy. Shostakovich's influence on the world of classical music in the twentieth century is profound, with his work noted for its sharp contrasts and ambivalent tonality, heavily influenced by neoclassicism and the romantic works of Gustav Mahler, which he studied in his youth. Shostakovich's work has continued to become more popular posthumously. It is among the most studied of Russian composers, mainly because of the intersection between his work and the politics of Russia, which eventually found him at odds with the government of Russia, especially under Soviet-era rule after his work was denounced in 1948 under the Zhdanov Doctrine, which impacted his career for the following years. However, he made no public statements renouncing the government during this period. Shostakovich was born in St. Petersburg and began piano lessons with his mother at nine before being admitted to the Petrograd Conservatory at thirteen under the tutelage of Alexander Glazunov, who closely monitored Shostakovich's progression and advancement. Following his graduation, Shostakovich began touring across Russia as a concert pianist; his initial performances were met with excellent receptions that frustrated the young composer. However, his reputation and original compositions gained significant popularity nationwide over the following years.
