The proportions ofthe Montesa Cota 25 are so like thefull-sized trialer on which it was mod-eled that it fools the eye, turning rocksinto boulders and bushes into trees. The bike is a mini-trialer, designedspecifically for serious junior-sized trialsriders 5 to 9 years old. We suppose Dad,who is pulling the purse strings, couldsteal it back from Junior for a blastaround the parking lot. But he wouldsoon return it. Everything on the ma-chine is scaled for Junior’s comfort, notDad’s.A 48.7-cc two-stroke Single, rated toproduce 1.6 bhp at 4500 rpm, powersthe Cota 25. Like the big 250-cc Cotaengine, the power curve is flat, toprovide good pulling power at minimalengine speed. The gearbox is not what we wouldcall sophisticated. It has only twospeeds, which is really all it needs inmost observed trials situations, consider-ing the small size and weight of bike andrider combined. The problem is that it does notprovide the conventional means of shift-ing gears by tapping a gear lever withthe foot while declutching with a left-hand lever. Instead, the clutch is of theautomatic, centrifugal type: turn thethrottle grip, and the engine accelerates, spinning a set of flyweights outward toengage a friction drum, which transmitspower to the back wheel through achain. The function of the automatic clutchis excellent, as it engages smoothly. Inneophyte hands, it may be preferable toa hand clutch, as it is nearly impossibleto kill the engine if the bike is being runthrough an extremely slow section. But the rider cannot shift gearseasily, as he must take his left handfrom the handlebars in order to operatea spring clip located on the top of thetransmission case. There are threenotched positions: a rearward “low”gear, with a top speed of about 9 mph;neutral in the middle; and “high” gear, good for 20 mph, in the forward posi-tion. These gears may be engaged whilethe bike is in motion, but obviously thesystem is not convenient. So the ridermust carefully plan his sections in ad-vance to decide which gear he’ll use.Fortunately, it will be low gear inmost cases, as there are few situations inthis class of trials riding where speeds ofmore than 10 mph would be necessaryor desirable. The one notable exceptionwould be a long, loose-surfaced steepen-ing climb, which demands a high speedapproach, and a deft, quick shot to alower gear if the bike begins to bogdown. 12041-7110-08
