IRWIN TOY Ltd. & FAMILY GAMES Inc. 1971 ‘THE GODFATHER GAME’ Board Game, 16711 Canada, 1st ed. OOP “A GAME FOR ALL THE FAMILIES” The game mechanic for gaining control of an area is inspired by the ancient oriental game of Go. Published by Family Games Inc. Gangster Thematic Board Game! It is a game based around the 1971 movie “The Godfather” based on novel of the same name by Mario Puzo. This is a RARE nostalgic pre-owned, discontinued, Canadian edition of the game ‘THE GODFATHER™ GAME’, model 16711, from the year 1971, the year ‘The Godfather’ film was released into cinemas. The game was made by Family Games, Inc. and distributed by IRWIN TOYS. It is English only labeled. This is considered a ‘Classic Game’ of the godfather genre of games. Nice addition to a Movie themed collection since it is viewed as one of the best ‘Godfather’ genre games, but it is also a great game to play with some similarities to Go, except that stones/tokens are bought for varying prices based on the area of the board they will be deployed to. Both the game components and the game packaging are in excellent. The game has been inventoried and is almost complete except for the cardboard indicator tokens. Replacement tokens can be purchased from online vendors or plastic bingo chips could be used in their place. Overview of the game from the back of the box: The exciting GODFATHER GAME… Lets two to four players fight for control of the rackets, testing their skills at Bookmaking, Extortion, Bootlegging, Loan Sharking and Hijacking. Each game-time mobster is given money, playing pieces, the ammunition with which he may enter one of the eight Neighborhoods of the game and wage a battle for control. He must decide when and where to use his money and “Muscle” to accumulate the most cash and Racket Control, thus winning the game and earning the title of the “the GODFATHER”. It’s a game of strategy, imagination, and a little luck. Overview of the game from Gameboardgeek.com: The Godfather Game puts players in the roles of mob bosses vying for control of rackets in several neighborhoods. The game plays like Go, except that stones are bought for varying prices based on the area of the board they will be deployed to. Three decks of cards provide monetary income for buying more stones and also good and bad events that must be dealt with. Think of the game as Go combined with some aspects of Monopoly, notably the money and the Chance and Community Chest cards. The game was issued in at least two editions - a standard rectangular box set, and a set packaged in a plastic violin case. In 1971 the Italian-American Civil Rights League successfully campaigned to have Macy's department stores stop selling the game on the grounds that it was defamatory to Italian-Americans. Setting of Game: The board represents Manhattan and each family must fight for control of eight rackets, such as book-making and loan-sharking. These rackets are spread over 8 locations – Harlem, Wall Street, Lower East Side, Park West, Upper West Side, Little Italy, The Docks and Midtown.Object of Game (How to win): The object of the game was to be the most successful mob boss by controlling the rackets - and earning the most money - in New York City, specifically Manhattan.Gameplay: The Godfather Game is for up to 4 players. Each player heads a ‘family’ of racketeers. The board represents Manhattan and each family must fight for control of eight rackets, such as book-making and loan-sharking. Each turn starts with you drawing a card and following its instructions. There are 52 cards, split into 4 types. There are 25 Good Break cards, 15 Racket cards, 10 Breaks of the Game cards and two Fingerman cards. The Good Break cards and the Racket cards will bring you cash or racketeers respectively. The Breaks of the Game cards will bring you good or bad news. And the Fingerman cards? They allow you to make a Hit and remove up to 3 men from an opponent’s family currently on the board. The game mechanic for gaining control of an area is inspired by the ancient oriental game of Go. As you place your men in an area, you are looking for a chance to control over half of the location, by occupying or governing spaces, and thus win the scam. The first player to place a hoodlum into an area can choose the racket that is in there. This governs the cost of each hoodlum that goes on the streets in that neighborhood. This can be decisive. If you ‘move in’ you will need the cash to sustain your presence, and opponents will need cash to meet your challenge. Unlike Go, you can place three men a turn (if you have the money to buy them) and you have three opponents to worry about, not one, as in Go.So, the game has a nice mixture of luck and skill. It is easier to gain control of a small area (Midtown, with 20 spaces) rather than a large area (Harlem, with 63 spaces). Men cannot be moved once placed so it requires some foresight. Make sure you have enough cash to sustain an ‘attack’ on an area because it might take several turns to win it. If you fight another racketeer, try to remember who has little cash, or at least, less than you. We prefer to keep cash-in-hand secret. A good Family Boss would always keep his money well hidden. If you want, you can sell men back to the bank at half price. So, if you can see you won’t win an area, it might be a good tactic to get out of there before victory is achieved by an opponent. If you lose an area, the men there are lost as well. So, cut your losses and fight another day somewhere else.Trivia: Tommy gun on box lid comes from the year 1971 “The Godfather” film that opened with tommyguns blasting. The star cast in the film included Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Diane Keaton and James Caan.
