Mississippi rolled up its greatest industrial gains in 1965, amassing a whopping $286.4 million in manufacturing capital investment and for the first time in state history, achieving the long-sought balance between industrial and farm employment. In fact, the year 1965 marked a great milestone in Mississippi’s 30-year surge for a place in the industrial sun, as the number of persons working in industry overtook and slightly surpassed the number working in agriculture. Pushing Mississippi forward during 1965 was an assortment of industries. Two examples found in the state are the H.K. Porter plant at Pascagoula (left), manufacturer of refractory brick for steel mills and paper and wood products (right).
