Spectators gather on the shores of Lake Taal 40 miles north of Manila to watch the dramatic formation of a giant thunderstorm caused by the eruption of the Taal Volcano this morning. Ash and lava from the huge crater five miles away showered on the outer shores. Some 2,000 Filipinos who lived on the volcano slopes fled to safety but unconfirmed reports told of capsized boats in which many are said to have drowned.
