Description: 1964 "Viking" Yearbook, Portland State College, Anarchy in The Park Blocks The Park Blocks Were Humming, Battle Lines Bein' Drawn, Anarchy on the Horizon. Here is a great little time capsule of the mid-1960's when revolution was in the air on college campuses across the nation and good old Portland State College (a commuter school located right downtown in Portland's South Park Blocks) was getting ready to join in. A couple years later the streets were barricaded with park benches and the administration had been kicked out of their offices by cigar smoking SDS rabble. Oh, and then the police riot squad marched in and cleaned things up; since then the park benches are all made of concrete and anchored to the ground. Yes, I was there taking photos. It was a different world. Anyhoo, besides all that, there were the normal college hi-jinks and run-amok events going on like proms, games, concerts, fraternities, student body elections, clubs, plays, dances, etc. are all duly recorded here. But you can read between the lines and see the future. Here is MLK Jr. calling attention to the distant battle in the South, Linus Pauling decrying nuclear proliferation, Wayne Morse getting ready to stand up in the Senate and rail about the Gulf of Tonkin, and much more. You just had to be there. This yearbook is in excellent condition and says it all. Portland State College, 1964 If Ever a Time Could Be Called "Groovy"The 60's Would Be It! As today is the era of technology and instant connection, the 60's were a time of social consciousness and mind expansion. When asked which era people would most like to live in, the 60's Summer of Love is the most popular destination. But, it's not coming back, and it doesn't have to, because it already thoroughly informs and drives the culture we are living today! So, just remember the next time you are tempted to say "Okay, Boomer..." to kiss off someone who looks old: The 60's were our gift to all you wanna-be hippies and hipsters out there!
