Description: The image at the center of this note is known in Mexico as "La Gitana" or The Gypsy. The popular myth is that it was inspired by Gloria Faure, a dancer and mistress of Finance Minister Alberto J. Pani. In reality, it is a generic portrait made by Robert Savage in 1910. The image at the back is the TheMonumento a la Independencia(Monument to Independence) was built in 1910 to celebrate the centennial of Mexico's War of Independence. The top of the monument is crowned with the goddess Nike and the base of the column is surrounded by sculptures of heroes of the War of Independence. Inside is a mausoleum with the remains of prominent national heroes.
