They are the songs of happiness—for happiness, after all, is what theLeFevres attempt to create through their gospel of music. As Eva Mae LeFevre, who emcees all the LeFevre programs says; “Gospelmusic is our calling." This ‘calling1 to sing the songs of gospel faith has foundthem dedicating their lives to this work, sacrificing material gain. The LeFevreshave turned down many offers to enter the field of popular music to devote theirtalents to the gospel songs because they feel, in this work, they are able to dispelgloom and to provide a greater inspiration for their devoted followers. In "Songs of Happiness" you will hear the songs you have requested mostduring the 33 years the LeFevres have been singing before the tremendous throngsthroughout the nation, on television and radio. In this album you will hear thewonderful LeFevre theme "Farther Along" which is better known than almost anyother theme in gospel music; "Every Day, Every Hour," one of the oldtimecountry hymns; “I've Been With Jesus," which features Eva Mae in both wordsand music; and "The Old Gospel Ship," one of the all-time gospel hits. You may be surprised to know that the LeFevres have been singing the greatgospel songs for more than 30 years. Many gospel fans aren't aware that thistype of religious music has been sung for that long. Actually the LeFevre Trio isresponsible, more than any other single group, for developing the interest nowmanifest in gospel singing. The LeFevre Trio was organized in 1925 by Urias and Alphus LeFevre, whostill sing with the group, and their sister, Maudie Mae LeFevre. Not long afterthe Trio became established and began to win national recognition, Maudie Maegave up her musical career for marriage. Soon to take her place was Eva MaeWhittington, pretty and talented daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. H. L. Whittington, who now is Mrs. Urias LeFevre.Eva Mae's outstanding singing talent and her distinctive piano style—a won-derful happy style—has probably contributed more to the success of the LeFevresthan any other one factor. This rhythmic, gospel feeling has been imitated by manyother groups in the nation, but has never been matched. It was this unique piano work which helped to establish the Trio’s signature,“Farther Along" as one of the best known of all gospel songs. This theme wasfamiliar to hundreds of thousands of listeners who tuned in Atlanta's WGST radiostation during the 18 consecutive years the LeFevres were on the air. Later, thismusic become familiar to a vast new audience on television by virtue of theLeFevre's appearances on television stations in all Southern and Eastern state$.It is generally accepted that unless a group keeps abreast of the times, itcannot continue successfully in the gospel field. The LeFevres have made changesin their work—but these changes have been so subtle that hardly any of theirfans were aware of them. .They have adapted their music library to the moderntrends and they have reworked their old arrangements with more modern arrange-ments which have kept pace with the ever-changing public taste for gospel music.A big factor in the success of the Trio has been the exceptional musical talentsof Alphus LeFevre who has written and arranged many of gospel music's mostwonderful songs. "The Old Gospel Ship" is one of Alphus' originals. It is recog-nized as the No. 1 favorite throughout the nation. It is the unique arrangementswhich set most of the LeFevre tunes apart from those of other groups. Alf, as heis known to gospel fans everywhere, does practically all the arranging for theTrio. His sincere smile has won him many friends everywhere the Trio has appeared.Alphus is happily married. His wife's name is Ellander.Even, though music comes naturally to the three, each has had extensive train-ing in music at major colleges throughout the country; such as Lee College, NorthCarolina State Teacher's College, Georgia Tech, Vaughn School of Music and StampsBaxter School of Music.Urias has the responsibilities of managing the organization and he has verylittle spare time. What time he does have is devoted to hunting, fishing, or flyinghis 195 Cessna plane. Urias and Eva Mae have five wonderful children, rangingin age from 3 to 22 years. The children have a Trio among themselves which iscalled the LeFevre Aires. The LeFevres have always been fortunate in having outstanding personalitieswith their group. In years gone by "Big Jim" Waifs, Hovie Lister, Bob Prather,Johnny Atkinson, Little Troy Lumpkin, Jimmy Kirby, James McCoy, Conner Hall, and others have joined the LeFevres to form quartets and quintets.Jimmy and Rex—the two stars who are featured with the LeFevres are actuallyJimmy Jones, the tall blond bass-baritone who left the Deep South Quartet; andRex Nelson, who left the Homeland Harmony Quartet to join the LeFevres.Jimmy, a fellow with an ever ready smile, had his own gospel disc jockeyprogram on WFAX, Falls Church, Virginia. He has sung on television and radiostations from the West to the East Coast.Jimmy was born February 5, 1921 on a farm near Scotsville, Kentucky. Aftergraduating from High School, he attended Western Teachers College at BowlingGreen. He served in the Medical Division of the Army during World War II. Afterleaving Service, he taught school for one year. However, singing was his calling, and he began his professional career in 1944 at Hot Springs, Arkansas. Duringthe early years of his singing career, he studied voice — perfecting his rangefrom bass to baritone and sometimes lead. He has made many friends from theWest to the East Coast, traveling with the once famous Rangers Quartet, his owngroup—the Deep South Quartet, and since June 1957, with the ever-loved LeFevres. In addition to his singing, he is now featured on the bass guitar. His favoritehobby is golf, which there is very little time for. He is married and has one sonnow serving in the Marine Corps. Quite naturally, his wife Louise, is an ardentfan. She tries to contribute her part to gospel singing by making a happy homefor Jimmy.Rex, a native of Asheville, North Carolina, was born January 19, 1932. Heattended Grace High School in Asheville, then went into the Marine Corps. Gospelsinging always having been his first love, he joined the Homeland HarmonyQuartet of Atlanta in September 19551 With them, he traveled many states, andsang on many radio and television stations. Today he is regarded as one of thebest bass singers in gospel music. He joined the LeFevres in September 1957. Inaddition to singing bass for the group, he plays the guitar. He is the lonebachelor in the group and devotes his spare time to golf and photography. As is in the case of Urias, however, the five members of the LeFevre organizationdo not have much time for play. The LeFevres travel approximately 100,000 milesa year, appearing at all-night sings in 42 of the 48 states. They travel by planeand in a special limousine and trailer which is necessary because of the group’smany musical instruments. These instruments include accordions, electric guitars, rhythm guitars, electric bass, violin and others. All five members of the group playan instrument. Alphus can play practically any instrument. So it is apparent that the LeFevres are a unique organization. And this—theirfirst album—represents the best in gospel music. LP84
