Spring loaded supports hold the hood open. BATTERY, LOCATION: Under hood, right side. Size – 53 ampere hour, 54 plate, 12 volt. Negative terminal grounded. RADIATOR: Drain cock at bottom of radiator, on right front side, reached from above or from underneath car. The cooling system is filled with a permanent type anti-freeze and a high opening thermostat is installed at the factory. If a methanol type anti-freeze is used, a low opening thermostat should be installed. BLOCK DRAIN: 6 - Plug, left rear side of cylinder block, near exhaust pipe. V8 - Plug at center of each block, under exhaust manifold. PRESSURE COOLING: Valve in cap set to open at 7 pounds pressure. The cap must always be turned down tightly to maintain the correct pressure. GAS TANK FILLER: Above left tail light. Hinged door in fender, opens to right. The information contained in this Mobilubrication Bulletin is based on latest ad- vice received direct from the factories. TRANSMISSION CONVENTIONAL (D-1): Standard on 6, and v8 (265). Optional on V8 (283): OVERDRIVE (D-4): Optional on 6, V8 (265), V8 (283 with one dual carburetor) - Check lubricant level every 1000 miles. Add lubricant as required. Drain, flush and refill every 10,000 miles. Use a good grade of flushing oil. Never steam clean or use kerosine or solvents to flush housing. When equipped with overdrive, checking of lubricant level and adding lubricant for both housings can be done at transmission filling hole. After draining, first fill the overdrive housing, until lubricant runs out of filling hole and replace the plug, then fill the transmission housing until lubricant is at the level of that filling hole and replace the plug. Filler Opening and Level Gauge: Plug in side of transmission housing is used to check and maintain the lubricant level in both housings. Plug in overdrive housing need not be used for normal refilling. Drain: Plug in bottom transmission and overdrive housings. POWERGLIDE (D-5): Standard on V8 (283). Optional on 6: TURBOGLIDE (D-5): Optional on V8 (283): – Check fluid level every 1000 miles. Drain and refill the housing every 25,000 miles. Extreme care must be used to prevent dirt from entering filler tube. The filler t ube and dipstick are on the right side of the engine, just opposite the starting motor, and can be reached from under the hood. The dipstick is marked "Full" and "Add 1 Qt" and fluid level should be between these two lines. Fluid level should be checked with engine idling, transmission warm, parking brake set and selector lever in "N" position. If the car has been parked for several hours before checking, run the engine for several minutes with the selector lever in "D", to warm up the fluid and fill the converter. Never check the level with the selector lever in "P" position. If car is equipped with air conditioning, fluid level is checked through plug in transmission right cover. Fluid must be at level of this hole. To prevent possible leakage, there is no drain plug in the torque converter. This means that the only drain plug is in the transmission so that less than half of the capacity of the Powerglide or Turboglide, 4-1/2 quarts, can be drained. See Mobilubrication Bulletin "Correct Lubrication of Automatic and Semi-Automatic Transmissions" for detailed instructions. REAR AXLE (HYPOID GEARS) (D-6): Check lubricant level every 1000 miles. Add lubricant as required. Drain, flush and refill after first 1000 miles and then every 10,000 miles. Use a good grade of flushing oil. Never steam clean or use kerosine or solvents to flush housing. Filler Opening and Level Gauge: Plug at rear of housing. Drain: Remove drain plug in bottom of housing. ----------- 3 ----------- GENERATOR (E-2) - Every 1000 miles, fill oiler at each end with Mobiloil Arctic. If the commutator end bearing becomes dry through failure to lubricate at regular intervals, fill cup three times, allowing sufficient time between fillings to permit oil to drain down. This succession filling should only be performed at the rear end, never at the front end. Over filling at the front oiler may damage the generator. DISTRIBUTOR (E-1) - All - Every 5000 miles apply1 drop but not more, of Mobiloil Arctic to breaker lever pivot. - 6 - Every 5000 miles grease cam sparingly with Mobilgrease No. 5 or MP. POWER STEERING (K-3): Optional - Reservoir over pump at left front of engine. Remove dipstick every 1000 miles and check fluid level. Use Mobilfluid 200 to maintain level at full mark on dipstick. AIR CLEANER: (K-2) - 6 - Olled element type, standard. Remove element and clean in Sovasol No. 5 every 1000 miles. Dry, oil with Mobiloil AF and replace element. V8 - Oil-bath type standard. Remove oil from reservoir every 1000 miles. Clean reservoir and element in Sovasol No. 5. Refill reservoir to indicated level with 1 pint of Mobiloil AF in Summer and Mobiloil Arctic in Winter.
