Elmer William Valo (March 5, 1921 – July 19, 1998) A fearless outfielder, Elmer Valo often injured himself colliding with ballpark walls to make heroic catches, robbing the likes of Ted Williams and Yogi Berra of home runs. Most of his 20-year career was with the Philadelphia Athletics, where he had some fine offensive seasons. An aggressive player, Valo was a line-drive hitter who hit for average. In 1955, he batted a lofty .364, although he had only 283 at-bats. Valo emigrated from Czechoslovakia when he was six years old and soon developed a love for baseball. During World War II, his baseball career was interrupted when he served in the US Army. After retiring as a player, Valo managed in the minors, and coached and scouted for several organizations. In 1990, he was chosen for the Philadelphia Wall of Fame. Elmer Valo passed away in 1998 at the age of 77.
