Description: Harper drops the “First Edition” statement on any printing after the first. Many copies here claiming to be 1st editions are actually later printings. The letters “M - C” [December 1953] appear only on the first edition, first printing of this Harper & Brothers US edition. Although it is not entirely in accordance with certain definitions of “edition”, many collectors and book dealers use “first edition’ as synonymous with “first edition, first printing”. If someone claims a book is a first edition, and neglects to state that it is a later printing, it is misleading. Here’s a relevant part of First Edition expert Allan Ahearn’s explanation for identifying Harper’s first editions: “Harper & Brothers. Prior to 1912, the date on the title page should match the last date on the copyright page. Began stating "First Edition" on the copyright page in 1922. A letter code for the month and year the book was printed, which would actually be earlier than the official publication date, was introduced in 1912. “ Covers with minimal wear. No dust jacket, needless to say, although facsimile jackets may be available. Binding square, strong, and tight. No writing or written marks anywhere in the book.
