Description: In 1942, U.S. Marine Corps officers worked with Camillus to develop the KA-BAR Fighting Utility Knife and in 1943, Camillus was awarded the first contract to produce it for the Marine Corps. The rarest and the best KA-BARS are the early ones. This one dates to early 1944 after the first style was changed to a curved guard on the knife, and the 9 rivets on the sheath were changed to staples. Ruggedly built, this KA-BAR features a 7 inch black phosphate coated, high carbon steel blade with a fuller that's machined into it. Its upward curved guard is stamped with "CAMILLUS NY" and "USMC" on the side. The stacked leather washer handle was treated to resist moisture. The handle and butt are secured by a single pin through the butt and tang. It has a thick, 3/8" steel disc pommel. The original-to-the-knife sheath is made of full grain, red-tinted cowhide with 9 staples and white stitching. (Note: Some of the stitches are worn away on the top side, but they still hold and there is no separation.) This all-original knife is solid and strong, and an important piece of WWII history.
