Description: Up for auction is a 1944 D WARTIME SILVER JEFFERSON nickel. This type was first issued in 1942-1945. This features a portrait of Jefferson facing left on the front and Monticello on the reverse. This coin is in a VERY VERY CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED condition. The Jefferson nickel was designed by Felix Schlag. The nickel is composed of 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese was introduced to eliminate nickel, a critical war material. A larger mintmark was placed above the dome of Monticello, indicating a change of alloy. The letter P (Philadelphia) was used for the first time.
