Description: 1940s Type 1 Jack JOHNSON & Honus WAGNER Boxing Baseball Photo of 2 Iconic Champions Unique, Classic Vintage Candid Type 1 Photo of Former Heavyweight Champion JACK JOHNSON & Baseball HOFer HONUS WAGNER John Arthur Johnson, nicknamed the "Galveston Giant", became the first Black American world heavyweight boxing champion (1908–1915). Widely regarded as one of the most influential boxers of all time, his 1910 fight against James J. JEFFRIES was dubbed the "fight of the century". JOHNSON continued taking paying fights for many years, and operated several other businesses, including lucrative endorsement deals. He died in a car crash on June 10, 1946, at the age of 68. He is buried at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago. WAGNER was nicknamed "The Flying Dutchman" due to his superb speed and German heritage. He won his eighth (and final) battling titles in 1911, a National League record that remains unbroken to this day In 1936, the Baseball Hall of Fame inducted WAGNER as one of the first five members. He received the second-highest vote total, behind TY COBB’s 222 and tied with BABE RUTH at 215.Most baseball historians consider WAGNER to be the greatest shortstop ever and one of the greatest players ever.
