Description: STAR Machinist Metal Covered Tool Chest. (Nation Tool and Chest Co. 1938-1948. Chicago. IL.) ( Manufactured by SIPCO, Schartow Iron Products, Co. Racine, Wi. 1938-1948.) All metal over wood construction. Oak front wood constructed drawers. 5/2. configuration. ( 5 upper drawers and 2 lower drawers.) This metal chest has been fully restored without removing any of the riveted hardware.The oak drawer fronts still retain their original finish. All new black felt installed inside the drawers and the top till. (Till and lid have side wall felting.) The metal covering the case has been decorated by scribing an artistic geometric pattern, polishing and finishing with wax coating. (It has not been painted) It is in extremely good condition. A little rust pitting on the top front right corner panel.The steel covering, which is not very thick, usually suffers from dings, dents and punctures.Not in this case. It has the original literature clip, lid slide plate and round mirror. No Key for the front clasp lock. The drawers slide in and out with ease and I am not seeing any scraping from the metal drawer supports. (A problem with some of these STAR cases that were inadvertently made with sharp edged drawer slides.) See photos of drawer sides. A very solid box, that weighs almost 24 lbs empty. Of note: Star boxes have extended pointed pins in the lid to activate the front panel locking pins when closed. They are unlike other chests that have the lock pins sticking up when the lid is open and pushed down to lock the front door when the lid is closed. This seemingly small difference in the pin locking arrangement is significant as the lid cannot be "budged" sideways when the pins are engaged in the front panel.
