Originally published in 1885, it has been reprinted many times, often in illustrated versions, and is considered to be one of the most influential children's works of the 19th century. Stevenson is best known for Treasure Island, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Kidnapped, and A Child's Garden of Verses. This wonderful illustrated children’s book has both bright, vivid color and black and white illustrations of Robert Louis Stevenson's poems by accomplished illustrator, Fern Bisel Peat (1893-1971). Peat illustrated several books for Samuel Lowe and Saalfield Publishing Company. From 1935 into the 50s, FBP served as the art director for “Children’s Playmate” magazine, and produced dozens (possibly all) of the publication's colorful covers. During these years, her work ended up in all manner of ephemera: paper doll collections, story illustrations, cut-out toys, etc., making her very well known. This hard cover vintage book has illustrated board covers with a blue cloth spine. There is some expected wear to the cover. The inside pages are clean. This would be a great book to read with little ones. It is worth the illustrations alone, which are all in remarkable condition. It would make a wonderful gift for a child, even today, or would be a unique addition to a vintage book or art collection! More information: “First published in 1885 under the title “Penny Whistles”, Robert Louis Stevenson’s “A Child’s Garden of Verses”, is a collection of sixty-five poems for children about darkness and solitude. Amongst the collection includes such classics as “Foreign Children”, “The Lamplighter”, “The Land of Counterpane”, “Bed in Summer”, “My Shadow”, and “The Swing.” Inspired by many of his personal experiences as a child, Stevenson in this collection evokes the loneliness of being young, which he personally felt growing up due to his many illnesses, the spirit of adventure that filled his imagination as a youth, and his recollections of friends, family, and nature during the times he spent playing in the gardens at Colinton Manse. A beautiful collection of poetry, “A Child’s Garden of Verses” is sure to evoke memories of youth in all its readers and delight the child in all of us.” “A Child's Garden of Verses is a collection of poetry for children about darkness and solitude by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. The collection has been reprinted many times, often in illustrated versions. …It is here accompanied by the splendid illustrations of Jessie Willcox Smith. Jessie Willcox Smith's delicate and powerful illustrations are perhaps the best known and definitely some of the most beautiful ever created for this classic collection of poetry. Stevenson (1850 - 1894), was a Scottish Scottish novelist, poet, essayist, musician and travel writer, most famous for penning Treasure Island, and the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. …Jessie Willcox Smith (1863 - 1935) was one of the most prominent female illustrators in the United States during the Golden Age of American Illustration. She was also a prolific contributor to literary novels and magazines during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Most notable was her ongoing relationship with “Good Housekeeping”, including the long-running 'Mother Goose' series. Smith's style changed drastically through her life. In the beginning of her career she used dark lined borders to delineate brightly coloured objects, and in later works she masterfully softened lines and colours - until they almost disappeared. Presented alongside the text, her illustrations bring further joy to Robert Louis Stevenson's poetry. Rediscover the delight and innocence of childhood in these classic poems from celebrated Scottish author, Robert Louis Stevenson. From make-believe to climbing trees, bedtime stories to morning play and favorite cousins to beloved mothers. Here is a very special collection to be treasured for ever.” “First published in 1885, the first printing of A Child's Garden of Verses ran 1000 copies by Longhaus, Green and Co in London. This book was not illustrated until the 1896 edition, published 2 years after Stevenson's death. The collection contains about 65 poems, and many of the poems, including “The Land of Counterpane,” take a positive perspective on Stevenson's own childhood which was plagued by sickness. He dedicated the work to his nurse Alison Cunningham.” “Although Stevenson died at just 44 years old and suffered from ill health the majority of his life, he managed to travel and write extensively in that short period. His most famous works are Treasure Island, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Kidnapped, and A Child's Garden of Verses. Although Stevenson fell out of the canon for a number of years, today he is one of the most translated authors and is highly celebrated for his stories. This is Stevenson's enduring collection of children's verse, the first major collection of poetry for children to capture the popular imagination, and still the most immune to the passage of time long after most Victorian sentimental verse has fallen away from the general memory.”
