Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar - Background & Design: The Walking Liberty half dollar, a silver 50-cent coin, was minted by the United States Mint from 1916 to 1947. The design of this remarkable coin was entrusted to Adolph A. Weinman, a highly acclaimed sculptor and engraver. In 1915, Mint Director Robert W. Woolley was of the opinion that he was not only permitted but also required by law to replace coin designs that had been in circulation for a quarter-century. Consequently, he initiated the process of replacing the Barber coinage – dimes, quarters, and half dollars, all featuring similar designs created by long-serving Mint Engraver Charles E. Barber and first minted in 1892. Woolley organized a competition, overseen by the Commission of Fine Arts, which resulted in Weinman being selected to design the dime and half dollar. The design of the half dollar showcases Liberty in full stride, advancing towards a new day. The graceful folds of the Stars and Stripes unfurl behind her, symbolizing progress and transformation. Liberty carries laurel and oak branches, representing the nation's achievements in both civil and military spheres. With an outstretched hand, she bestows the spirit of liberty upon all. On the reverse side of the coin, an eagle confidently perches on a rugged mountain crag, its wings proudly spread, embodying fearlessness and strength. A young pine sapling emerges from a cleft in the rock, symbolizing the enduring spirit of America. Seize this opportunity to invest in this remarkable coin now!
