1937 Rare American coins from 1652 displayed at convention Type 1 Press Photo

Description: RARE OLD COINS ON DISPLAY AT NUMISMATIC CONVENTION WASHINGTON, D.C. AUG. 21—THE COLLECTION OF FIRST COINS MINTED IN AMERICA, DATING BACK AS EARLY AS 1652, WAS ENVIED BY COIN COLLECTORS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AS THEY ATTENDED THE AMERICAN NUMISMATIC CONVENTION HERE TODAY. THE COLLECTION IS OWNED BY T. JAMES CLARKE, PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAN NUMISMATIC ASSOCIATION, WHO IS SHOWING THEM TO F.E. HODGE (LEFT) AND G.T. SHIRLEY LEACHMAN. THE COINS ARE MADE OF SILVER. 8/21/37 This photograph describes a display of rare American coins at a numismatic convention held on August 21, 1937. The coins, dating back to 1652, are part of a collection owned by T. James Clarke, who was the president of the American Numismatic Association at the time. The event drew the attention of coin collectors nationwide. The early American coins, prized for their historical value, are notable for being made of silver, reflecting the minting practices of the era. === This 7x8.5” original type 1 photograph is from the personal collection of photographer Wes Howland (1906-1956). Howland was a reporter with the Harris-Ewing news service in Washington D.C from 1931-1941, and went on to serve with the military. He was one of a small number of photographers with complete access to the White House, Capitol, Senate, and House. This photo was part of a collection of over 1200 8x10” Wes Howland personal archive images that we acquired from his estate. These original prints are exceptionally rare, if not the only that exist. Not only did Mr Howland have incredible access to the government figures of the day, but he was a highly skilled photographer who produced some stunning historical images and documented Washington D.C. in the 1930s like few others. This photo is a unique piece of history, and we trust you will enjoy it in your collection. We are happy to offer discounts if you order multiple photos.
