Dr. Stuart MacLennan, called as pastor in 1921, began the legacy of great preaching that is a hallmark of FPCH. During his twenty-year tenure, he inspired the church, established a local radio ministry, and led the campaign to underwrite and build the present sanctuary, that cornerstone being laid in 1923. So vital was worship to the life of the church that the sanctuary was designed to hold 1,600 people, well beyond the 1,000 on the membership role. Dr. MacLennan was instrumental in persuading Henrietta Mears to take the position as Director of Christian Education, where for 35 years, from 1928-1963, Miss Mears established a legacy of Christian education and ministry that was unique in American Christendom. During the 1950s, she ministered through the College Department to many hundreds of men and women, including such future leaders as Louis Evans, Jr.; Bill Bright, Donn Moomaw, and Dale Bruner. Her vision for a Christian camp in the local mountains led to the purchase and subsequent development of Forest Home. She also founded Gospel Light Press (Sunday School curriculum).Reverend Stuart MacLennan. But just over a hundred years ago, he was pastor of Hollywood Presbyterian Church in Southern California. At the time of his arrival to the corner of Gower and Carlos Streets, the congregation numbered just over 651 members. But California was growing – and so was his church.Accepting speaking engagements around the country, presumably to not only share the Gospel but also make people aware of Hollywood Pres’ burgeoning ministry, Reverend MacLennan found himself speaking one Sunday at a small church in Minneapolis. But the years rolled on, Mears took a sabbatical to travel and in 1927, she found herself in Southern California. By now, MacLennan’s congregation was in a magnificent, new red-brick, gothic themed building was regularly hosting over 2,000 worshippers each Sunday. The pastor needed help. Would Mears agree to join the staff as Christian Education Director? She prayerfully considered and then enthusiastically accepted.Until her death in 1963, Mears would go on to serve Hollywood Presbyterian Church and the wider Christian community around the world in profound and unprecedented ways. Rarely has one hire in a church made such a huge difference around the world. If for any reason your transaction was NOT SATISFACTORY, pls contact me and I will work something out with you. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A REASON TO GIVE ME A NEGATIVE RATING or a LOW STAR RATING. Quick note on grading: The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise."EXCEPTIONALLY QUIET" is close to noiseless, like a vinyl pressing."VERY QUIET" is an above average quiet record for a given pressing."Quiet" is a record that is a great example with some noise. These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment. Multiple item shipping: I am happy to combine items for shipment in one parcel.
