Description: 1924 Jeux Olympiques de Paris #177 Duke Kahanamoku PSA 3 VG Pop 1 Although he certainly didn't invent the sport of surfing, Duke Kahanamoku is widely regarded as the godfather of the sport. Duke established several world records in swimming freestyle in the Honolulu Harbor in 1911 and won Gold in the 100-meter free in the 1912 Stockholm games. He repeated in Antwerp in 1920 and added another Gold in the relay but lost in 1924 to up-and-comer Johnny Weissmuller. Arguably the most famous waterman of the entire 20th century, if not of all time, Kahanamoku traveled the world extensively throughout the first half of the century, performing both swimming and surfing exhibitions, spreading the gospel of wave riding and helping to teach what would soon become one of the most popular sports on the planet.
