Gertrude Kay (1884-1939) was an American children's literature illustrator and author best known for her work in fairy tales and beginner novels. She was active during America's Golden Age of Illustration. During her time as an illustrator, Gertrude Kay published numerous children's books and contributed dozens of illustrations to publications like Ladies Home Journal and McCall's. In addition to her work in literature, Ms. Kay was also known for her illustrated paper dolls and magazine covers. The majority of her work was completed with gouache paints, though she also worked with ink. Her illustrations were highly regarded for their accurate portrayals of children and childhood. Sarah Addington (1891-1940) was an author of children's books and a newspaper journalist. In her youth, she attended Columbia University, where she graduated as the only women member of the first class of the Pulitzer School of Journalism. In 1915, she became special writer for the Sunday magazine section of the New York Tribune and later was assistant publicity director of the National American Women Suffrage Association. From 1921 to 1923, she was on the staff of The Ladies Home Journal, which printed her series of Pudding Lane stories for juvenile readers, afterwards published in book form (such as this Mrs. Claus volume). She was always an ardent supporter, if not an active participant, in numerous liberal movements and literary groups. ————— “Gertrude Kay (1884-1939), illustrator and landscape painter, grew up in Alliance, Ohio, where her father was a prosperous hardware merchant. She studied illustration at the Philadelphia Museum School of Design and with Howard Pyle at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia. Along with other women students of Howard Pyle including Sarah Stilwell Weber, Elizabeth Shippen Green, Violet Oakley, Alice Barber Stephens, and Katherine Pyle, Gertrude Alice Kay found success in the male-dominated world of commercial illustration. She produced covers and story illustrations for Ladies' Home Journal and other magazines from around 1908 through the 1920s. During this time she illustrated children's books as well." - AskArt.com "Sarah Addington, Most prolific in the field of children's stories, gay and whimsical, she had distinguished herself also in journalism and contemporary comment, for she loved the swift drama of history in the making and her keen mind attacked its secrets with unfailing zest. Always abreast of the liberal thought of her times, her career began in spirited adherence to woman suffrage, and ended while absorbed in studies of the Mexican revolution." - AddingtonAssociation.org
