Additional Information Published six years after its establishment as the first National Park east of the Mississippi River, this distinct depiction of the iconic Acadia National Park immediately transports the viewer back in time. Originally named Sieur de Monts in 1916, then Lafayette National Park in 1919, it would be renamed Acadia in 1929 to honor the original French colony that had inhabited the island as well as much of Maine. Philanthropist and Industrialist John D. Rockefeller was responsible for much of the development throughout the park and had been one of the so-called Cottagers who built luxurious estates on the island in the late 19th century. Before that period, the late 1870s had found a number of artists and journalists discovering the untouched beauty and nature of the region, including prominent members of the Hudson Schools. By the 1880s, approximately thirty hotels were operating, and the cool summers and relaxing pace were attracting tourists from throughout the region. As this tourism grew, so did wealthy visitors who expanded the development of the area with large estates and lavish parties throughout the summers. Landscape Architect Charles Eliot is credited with the idea of establishing the park. One of the most unique features of the park is that much of it was created through private funding and not federally approved funds with the exception of the carriage roads, which were constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conversation Corps. The distinctive aesthetic and tremendous amount of detail contained on this map immediately transports the viewer back in time, and this is truly an authentic piece of cartographical history. Our museum quality giclee Acadia map print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. This eye-catching Acadia Park vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
