Description: 1920 W519 - #16 Kid Gleason, Chicago White Sox - SGC 3 -Very Rare, Highly GradedOn the Manager - William Jethro "Kid" Gleason (1866-1933): Kid Gleason was a pitcher and second baseman for the Philadelphia Quakers/Phillies (1888–1891 & 1903-1908), St. Louis Browns (1892–1894), Baltimore Orioles (1894–1895), New York Giants (1896–1900), Detroit Tigers (1901–1902), and Chicago White Sox (1912). Gleason acquired the nickname “Kid” early in life because of his short stature and his energetic, youthful nature. After his playing days ended, Gleason managed the Chicago White Sox from 1919 through 1923. His first season as the White Sox manager was notable for his team's appearance in the World Series, and the ensuing Black Sox Scandal. Gleason was not involved in the scandal. On the Card - Due to the poor quality paper used in producing strip cards, and the process of ripping or cutting the cards from larger strips, W519 cards graded above "Authentic" are rare. This SGC 3 is the highest graded Gleason example in the SGC database. On the Set, W519 - Around one hundred years ago, retailers such as grocery or candy stores had baseball cards available in strips available for sale. As these “strip” cards often came in long strips where merchants would cut or rip off cards, rough or uneven edges, and inconsistent card sizes were the norm. Strip cards are classified in the American Card Catalog as W-Cards. The 1920 W519 Type I hand-cut series, also known as W519-1-1 or W519 Numbered 1, consisted of 20 strip cards that measured approximately 1-1/2" by 2-1/2". These blank-backed cards featured colorized player likenesses on the front with vibrant backgrounds, usually blue or red/maroon. The Type 1 cards were numbered in black ink at the bottom left, with the player's name written in capital letters next to the number. The W519 set has no established distribution date, but based upon uniforms and the players included, 1920 was determined as the most likely year. The cards were produced by the Decalco Lithographic Company as the edge of some W519 and W521 strip cards bears this name. Located in the 1920s in Hoboken, New Jersey, Decalco Lithographic Company was founded in 1908 as American Transfer Pictures & Printing Co.
