This original newspaper contains a prominent inside page heading: "NEGR0ES PRAY FOR (Republican Warren G) HARDING'S ELECTION" (as US President), with 2 columns of text describing the support by African-Americans for Warren G Harding for US President. Warren Gamaliel Harding (November 2, 1865 – August 2, 1923) was the 29th president of the United States, serving from 1921 until his death in 1923. A member of the Republican Party, he was one of the most popular sitting U.S. presidents while in office. After his death, a number of scandals were exposed, including Teapot Dome, as well as an extramarital affair with Nan Britton, which tarnished his reputation.Much of the disdain for Harding was due to the affection academic historians had for Harding’s predecessor, Woodrow Wilson. Wilson — a political science professor who had earlier been president of Princeton University and is the only U.S. president to have earned a Ph.D. — led the country during World War I and had a prominent role in setting how the postwar world was arranged.Harding’s election was, in part, a repudiation of Wilson — Harding promised a return to “normalcy” after the upheavals of the war — so those who lionized Wilson and were upset that the U.S. did not continue to pursue Wilson’s postwar vision were more than happy to jump upon Harding’s mistakes.Wilson, who was born and grew up in the South, also was a racist. He did not want Black students at Princeton. Segregation became widespread in federal workplaces under his administration. His response to race riots in U.S. cities was almost nonexistent. Harding’s support for African Americans is why public esteem for Harding is on the rise. Very good condition.
