Description: 1919-1921 W514 - #9, Claude Hendrix, Chicago Cubs - SGC 2 On the Player - Claude Raymond Hendrix (1889-1944) was an MLB pitcher who played in the National League for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1911–1913) and the Chicago Cubs (1916–1920), as well as in the Federal League with the Chicago Whales (1914–1915). During his time with the Whales, Hendrix was the Federal League champion in 1915, the ERA champion in 1914, and led the league in wins that same year. Notably, he pitched a no-hitter in 1915 and became the first pitcher to earn a win at Wrigley Field, then called Weeghman Park. Over his career, Hendrix accumulated an impressive 31.7 WAR, with a record of 144 wins, 116 losses, and a 2.65 ERA. In 1921, he faced accusations of tipping off a gambler about a potentially fixed game in 1920. Although unproven, this allegation likely marked the end of his career in baseball. On the Set - 1919 W514 - One hundred years ago, retailers such as grocery or candy stores had baseball sports cards available in strips for customers to buy, or to give away with purchases to loyal customers. As these “strip” cards often came in a long strip where merchants could cut or rip off a certain amount for customers, rough or uneven edges, and inconsistent card sizes were the norm. They are classified in the American Card Catalog as W-Cards. Of all strip cards, possibly the most popular strip set is the 1919-1921 W514 set. The W514 set is comprised of 120 cards measuring approximately 1-7/16" x 2-1/2". The card fronts portray a color drawing of each baseball player, with a color background and a thin black line surrounding the picture. The player’s name, team, and position are identified at the bottom of the card. Each card number is in small script within the frame, bottom right or left. Card backs are usually blank. Player drawings generally were modeled after photographs taken by famous photographer Charles Martin Conlon (1868-1945). Among thousands of photos, Conlon’s most famous photograph is of Ty Cobb stealing third base, sliding into a waiting Jimmy Austin.
