Description: Wonderful bound volume of L'Illustration newspaper or magazine, comprised of weekly issues from July thru December 1917--in the heart of WWI in Europe! Large issues (book is just under 12"x16" and weighs over 11 pounds), profusely illustrated with current world and French events. Filled with interesting articles and images of military aviators, zeppelin airships, soldiers in trenches, and more, all in French. This time period especially notable for the arrival of Americans in the war in Europe and several articles focusing on them and July 4th celebration related to them. From the American Battle Monuments Commissions website: "July 4th, 1917 in Paris: Celebrating the United States' Arrival into World War I. Just after their arrival in France some American soldiers became a symbol of deliverance for the French people. The first American Expeditionary Forces' (AEF) contingent landed in France in late June 1917." From Wikipedia: L'Illustration was a weekly French newspaper published in Paris from 1843 to 1944.[1] It was founded by Édouard Charton with the first issue published on 4 March 1843, it became the first illustrated newspaper in France then, after 1906, the first international illustrated magazine. In 1891, L'Illustration became the first French newspaper to publish a photograph. Many of these photographs came from syndicated photo-press agencies like Chusseau-Flaviens, but the publication also employed its own photographers such as Léon Gimpel and others. In 1907, L'Illustration was the first to publish a color photograph." Fair condition only--the book is missing the spine cloth but the magazines are still bound in. There are occasional cutouts, and some tape repairs, pencil or pen markings. Other wear and tear throughout. The war medals page alone (photo 10) sold for $35 in 2015.
