Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1986). Honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts, member of the Union of Submariners. People's Artist of Russia (2005). Vladimir Dionisovich Kalensk was born in the city of Irkutsk into a large family with many children. In 1925, the artist's father was invited to work at the Supreme Economic Council of the USSR, and the family moved to Moscow. In 1940, V.D.Kalensky was called up for active military service in the USSR Navy. During the Great Patriotic War, the Red Navy sailor Vladimir Kalensky served in the Intelligence Directorate of the Northern Fleet as a radio reconnaissance officer. He made several military trips on the S-56 submarine. He took part in special operations for the combat support of the detachment of twice Hero of the Soviet Union V. N. Leonov. He was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, the Red Star, the medals "Admiral Nakhimov", "For the Defense of the Arctic", "For the victory over Germany." In September 1945 he entered the Moscow Higher School of Industrial Art (formerly Stroganov), where he studied with S.V. Gerasimov, A.V. Kuprin, P.V. Kuznetsov, V.F.Bordichenko, E. Egorov, S. Frolov. He taught at his own school, was an assistant to Professor S. V. Gerasimov (1952-1957). Having experienced the difficulties and hardships of the long years of the Great Patriotic War in the intelligence of the Northern Fleet, Vladimir Kalensky always took a patriotic position, which he reflected in his work, as a rule, dedicated primarily to the defenders of the Fatherland. In his work, he continued the traditions of the Soviet realistic school, glorified his native land. He wrote a number of heroic canvases dedicated to the soldiers of the Red Army: "In the garden of the Germans, Norway - 1944". Residents of Moscow and Tver will forever remember it for the painting of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Kurkino (Moscow), the decoration and stained-glass windows of the Moscow metro station Tsvetnoy Boulevard, the creation of the memorial complex “In memory of the feat of Sergeant Vasilkovsky and the soldiers of the 185th Infantry Division” in Konakovo, Tver Region. In a creative collaboration with his wife, artist I. V. Kalenskaya worked a lot in the field of social, social and political posters. Made posters dedicated to space, childhood, school and pioneers. Recognition of handwriting in poster art is not a very common phenomenon. Not always, looking at a poster, you can tell exactly who created it. Only great masters managed to find individuality. Working in the poster, Kalensky developed a recognizable style, using typical features characteristic of the time, found his own style. From 1957 to 1978 he participated in exhibitions of Soviet artists in England, Belgium, Canada, China, Korea, Mongolia, the Netherlands, Poland, Czechoslovakia. Since 1993, personal exhibitions have been constantly held. Repeatedly, with the support of the NP Association of Tver Communities, exhibitions of the artist were held in Konakovo, Tver, Rzhev, Staritsa. In 1983 he received the first prize of the Moscow city organization of the Art Fund of the RSFSR for the creation of a memorial complex in memory of the feat of Sergeant Vasilkovsky and soldiers of the 185th rifle division in the village of Ryabinki, Konakovsky district, Kalinin region. In 1987 - V. D. Kalensky was awarded the First Prize of the Moscow City Union of Artists for the creation of stained-glass windows for the Tsvetnoy Bulvar station of the Moscow metro.
