Description: The second printing of the first edition of the Boy Scouts Handbook with an introduction by Ernest Thompson Seton illustrated by a variety of line drawings demonstrating the variety of skills that boys could learn by participating in Scouts. In fragile but acceptable condition, this has the name of the young man (Capt Albert E Manning of Lex. Mass) written on the Boy Scout Certificate page (qualified as a tenderfoot on February 26, 1912). It looks like some sort of waxed paper encased the book wth that crinkly paper still covering the back and pasted down inside is an ad for “this Best Boys’ magazine in the World! The American Boy”. This extends over the spine to the front where it has been ripped away to expose the light weight oil cloth front with the waving scout in front of a rugged rural backdrop. The front has chipped corners and some material loss at the front where the weave of the cloth is exposed. Pages inside have chipped corners, dog-earring and slightly discolored pages due to age. Occasional foxed page. Line drawings throughout of a variety of activities. Scout Certificate page partially filled out. Appendix at rear describing uniform and equipment as well as reference books and 25 pages of advertisements at the rear. The last page is pasted down with the inside corner loosened and folded down showing more “boy stuff” on the reverse of the back cover which is torn at gutter top and bottom but still attached.Acceptable: 8vo: oil cloth with waxed overlay, torn off front but intact on spine and back: waving scout cover: bends and missing corners at front: scuffing to the pictorial: brown spot inside from front to end of Seton’s introduction: occasional writing where Capt. Manning earned a badge: occasional photo illustration but primarily line drawings: occasional foxing and finger prints: “Boy Scouts of America: the Offical Handbook for Boys”: Published for The Boy Scouts of America: Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Page & Company: 1911RAREA1911AJOA
