Description: AN OLD SWEETHEART OF MINE Written by James Whitcomb Riley with illustrations by Howard Chandler Christy and page decorations by Virginia Keep. Published by The Bobbs-Merrill Company, Indianapolis. Copyright 1902; “first as such”—this is the beautiful, Christy illustrated Bobbs-Merrill edition of the poem first published in 1888. From Wikipedia: James Whitcomb Riley (October 7, 1849 – July 22, 1916) was an American writer, poet, and best-selling author. During his lifetime he was known as the "Hoosier Poet" and "Children's Poet" for his dialect works and his children's poetry respectively. His poems tended to be humorous or sentimental, and of the approximately 1,000 poems that Riley wrote, the majority are in dialect. His famous works include "Little Orphant Annie" and "The Raggedy Man". Riley's chief legacy was his influence in fostering the creation of a Midwestern cultural identity and his contributions to the Golden Age of Indiana Literature. With other writers of his era, he helped create a caricature of Midwesterners and formed a literary community that produced works rivaling the established eastern literati. From Wikipedia: Howard Chandler Christy (January 10, 1872 – March 3, 1952) was an American artist and illustrator, famous for the "Christy Girl" – a colorful and illustrious successor to the "Gibson Girl" – who became the most popular portrait painter of the Jazz Age era. Christy painted such luminaries as Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt, and Presidents Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Harry Truman. Other famous people he painted include William Randolph Hearst, the Prince of Wales (Edward the VIII), Eddie Rickenbacker, Benito Mussolini, Prince Umberto and Amelia Earhart. From the 1920s until the 1940s, Christy was well known for capturing the likenesses of congressmen, senators, industrialists, movies stars, and socialites. DESCRIPTION: 88 pages 9 x 6 1/2 inches illustrated edition hardcover CONDITION: This hard-cover book is in very good condition. There is no dustjacket, most likely it was not issued with one. The bluish-green cloth hardcover is clean and shows light wear at the corners and spine ends. The spine has faded to a bluer tone. The gilt lettering, cream art decorations and image insert on the front board are in excellent shape. There is a very nice old book plate attached to the front pastedown. The original owner’s name and address is in ink on the second blank endpaper. I believe that the frontispiece had a tissue guard which is now missing. The interior is otherwise excellent with no other marks, underlining, tears or odor. The paper is a very heavy and thick, clay-coated stock. The hinges and binding are very good with no loose or missing pages. BECAUSE MEDIA RATE SHIPPING IS FREE ON THE BOOKS I SELL, COMBINE THIS WITH OTHER ITEMS FROM MY EBAY STORE.
