Fortunat is a poor man who one day meets the goddess of fortune. When given the choice, he chooses wealth rather than wisdom, health, or strength, and receives a magic purse which will always remain full of money no matter how often he takes some out. “Die Nymphe des Brunnens” follows the intricate lives of a noble family, highlighting their tribulations and the influence of water spirits. The tale centers on the character of Mathilde, the wife of a notorious robber. After an encounter with a mysterious water nymph, she learns of her husband's fate and the future of their unborn daughter.
