Guido Verbeck was one of the most important foreign political advisors during the Meiji period Japan. He moved to Nagasaki in 1859 as a missionary for the Dutch Reformed Church. He taught foreign languages, politics, and sciences at a local school to about one hundred students. He later became an advisor to the Ministry of Education after its establishment in 1871.
