Description: 18th Century Antique Mdme. Pompadour Oil Portrait signedNattier Probable Fake. Shipped with UPS Special Fine Arts HandlingThis painting is signed “Nattier”and dates probably from mid-18th Century. Jean Marc Nattier was one of the most esteemed painters in France during the reign of Louis XV, and was named the official court painter. His paintings hang in most of the great museums around the world. However, it is most likely that this painting is a very good forgery from the era. (if it was an original, the price would be close to a million dollars) It was common at the time for wealthy people to purchase such paintings, masquerading as the original, to impress their friends, especially after the master painter died (1766), at whichpoint the master could not verify the authenticity of the painting. The subject matter is Madame Pompadour, one of the most flamboyant and effervescent characters of the Court of Louis XV. She not only was the King’s mistress, who openly appeared with him in official affairs, but her artistic talents were used to select the furnishings for the Palace at Versailles. She was known throughout the Courts of Europe as grand champion of the arts.Because of her renown, she was painted by most of the great French painters of the era, including Boucher, and Quentin de la Tour (see comparison pictures in photographs to compare a Nattier with a de la Tour, just to verify that this painting is of Mdme.Pompadour.) The provenance of this painting comes to me by word of mouth from my father (who purchased the painting) and the antique dealer who sold it, Mason Cleveland of Somerset, Massachusetts. Cleveland bought two portraits, this one and the other in the comparison photo, both of Mdme. Pompadour from an estate auction in Beacon Hill in Boston. The owner was a WWI veteran army officer who returned to Europe. He apparently loved Mdme. Pompadour, and purchased the two paintings on a trip to Paris in the early 1920s.The painting was professionally re-backed prior to 1960 when it was acquired by my father. A black-light inspection indicates there have been some very minor touchups and repairs to the background (insignificant) but apparently none to the head, face, skin, or dress. This is a beautiful and elegant painting that has hung in my home for decades. It will grace the collection of anyone who appreciates the finer classical arts and antiques. This painting will be shipped as fine art by UPS and will be packaged in a special plywood crate and packed by an art dealer who will treat it as a collector’s item.
