Description: For sale is an original antique 1899 Vinton, Iowa Christ & Whipple Attorneys Law Firm Cover An entry from the Progressive Men of Iowa book:WHIPPLE, WILLIAM PERRY, lawyer, orator and scholar, member of the law firm of Gilchrist, Whipple & Montgomery, of Vin ton, was born in that town December 26, 1856. His parents settled in Benton county in the year 1854, purchasing their land of the United States government at $1.25 an acre. The father, Cyrenius T. Whipple. is now an extensive land owner there and one of the largest cattle raisers in eastern Iowa. His mother, Nancy Cline Whipple, is a native of Indiana Both parents are living. William P. Whipple attended the com mon schools near Vinton during his boy. hood days and entered the State university in 1873, graduating from the collegiate de partment in June, 1877, and from the law department in 1878. He was a member of the Zethagathian society, and was its repre sentative at the commencement exercises in 1876. He was one of the five selected by the faculty to compete in the junior oratorical contest, securing third place. He was awarded first prize in June, 1878, for the best essay on the subject: "Should the Grand Jury be Abolished?" He began the practice of law in Vinton, August 14, 1878, and the following year was elected city attorney and held the office four con- secutive terms. After several years of practice he became associated with Judge George M. Gilchrist. The firm of Gil christ & Whipple soon became one of the strongest law firms in that part of the state Mr. Whipple's law firm is now Gilchrist, Whipple & Montgomery, composed of Judge Geo. M. Gilchrist, W. P. Whipple and S. B. Montgomery. They have a branch office in Belle Plaine and enjoy a large and lucrative practice. Mr. Whipple was at different times associated as partner with Cato Sells and Morris Zollinger. Mr. Whipple is president and attorney for the lowa Paint company, and represents R. G. Dun & Co. and other leading commercial agencies. The firm is attorney for num- erous large corporations. Mr. Whipple's financial and professional success is a demonstration of what energy and ability ean accomplish of their own force, as he has been the architect his own fortune. of Mr. Whipple was married September 7, 1881, to Miss Catherine D. Joyce, who was at that time assistant principal of the Vin- ton high school. She died April 14, 1886, leaving two sons: Cyrenius and Milo. Mr. Whipple was again married October 18, 1887, to Miss Jennie Keith, a teacher in the primary department of the Vinton schools. His son, Cyrenius, was drowned in the Cedar river below Vinton in June, 1897, and his untimely death called forth universal mourning in the town where he was so well liked. The local papers at the time were filled with tributes to his memory. Mr. Whipple has always been a republican. Though he has not been a candidate for office he hus, nevertheless, contributed his full share to the success of his party. He is president of the board of education, a trustee of the Presbyterian church, and a member of the Odd Fellows fraternity. Size: 6.5" x 3-5/8" - Ripped open on left side.
