Description: Hard to find complete 23-page issue of the Athenaeum (London) for 24 July 1897 is in good condition. Just a bit of edge wear, tiny closed tears, to a few margins. Some highlights include: A long opening essay in review of the Sidney Lee-edited (volume 51) Dictionary of National Biography, this one focusing on Lee's expanded entry for William Shakespeare, one of the best, and it would be for many years to come, ever written. Lee was then, seemingly in his spare time, writing his classic biography of Shakespeare, which first appeared in 1898, one which he would revise and correct numerous times during the next 25 years. It's still one of the best works on Shakespeare's life and work that we have. Another longer essay in review of the Hugh Pearse-edited Crimean Diary and Letters of Lt. General Sir Charles Ash Windham. A review of Egyptian scholar E.A. Wallis Budge's An Egyptian Reading Book for Beginners. A review of the 33 year-old poet, novelist and feminist May Sinclair's first novel, Audrey Craven. This volume, in a first hardcover edition, is today nearly impossible to find. A longer essay in review of Emile Verhaeren's 2-volume Paris-published Poemes. Two full columns in review of new works by Australian poets A.B. Paterson, John Bernard O'Hara, and Francis Kenna. A longer "Travel" review of a new work on Siam, Siam on the Meinam from the Gulf to Aynthia together with Three Romances illustrative of Siamese Life and Customs by Maxwell Sommerville. A full column on the passing (at age 77) of the popular English poet Jean Ingelow. Numerous other reviews, book notes, reports, etc. 23-page issue. See index in photo (top left-hand corner).
