Ex-libris bookplate found on front paste-down: C. Beatrice Underwood. Normal age-related toning throughout text-block; mostly to edges of leaves. Bookplate also found on rear paste-down: "Private Library of Clara B. Underwood. No. 224. 'And please return it. You may think this is a strange request, but I find that although many of my friends are poor arithmeticians, they are nearly all of them good book-keepers.' Scott." Binding tight and intact. Undine is a fairytale novella (Erzählung) in which Undine, a water spirit, marries a knight named Huldbrand in order to gain a soul. Originally published in 1811, it is an early German romance, which has been translated into English and other languages. Provenance of Clara Beatrice Underwood (1899-1990) of Illinois.
