Description: Department of The Interior, Census Office. Robert P. Porter, Superintendent. Carroll D. Wright, Commissioner of Labor in Charge. Report on Indians Taxed and Indians Not Taxed in The United States (Except Alaska) at the Eleventh Census: 1890. Washington D.C.: Government printing office. 1894. Disbound, 783 pp, 11 x 9”, 4to. In poor condition. As is. A disbound work: no spine or boards. Title (possibly front cover) exhibits foxing & ink staining on fore-edge. Ink staining continues through approximately page 35. Spine lacking - cording frayed & beginning to unravel. Title page to page 16 detached from binding. Index at rear of text is also detached. Detached pages are scuffed at edges and some are chipped. Toning throughout text-block. Fold-out maps overall clean, intact, and colorful. Some light toning on fold-outs creases, but otherwise clean. Colored plates include tissue guards; some tissue guards are lacking, others are folded/creased, chipped, or detached. Cording exposed throughout text-block - binding is extremely fragile. Perfect candidate for restoration. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. With 19 chromolithograph plates of Native Americans, etc. (2 are folding titled The Race and Omaha Dance by Walter Shirlaw), plus others by Julian Scott, with tissue-guards; 2 chromolithographs of pictographs; 2 sepia-tone lithograph plates; 157 plates from numerous photographs; 16 plates from drawings; 8 plates from paintings; 3 folding color lithograph maps (showing Indian Reservations in the U.S. by T.J. Morgan, Linguistic Stocks of American Indians by J.W. Powell, etc.); 22 full-page maps (2 with coloring, 6 double-page and 4 are folding); plus numerous tables and a few facsimiles. Perhaps the most important and exhaustive treatment of the American Indian in the 19th Century. While the Dawes Act (1887) was originally designed to either keep the Indian on the reservations (or else be assimilated into what they thought characterized an American), this was the most notable governmental study of the 19th Century. Disbound, but complete. FORN-SHELF-0664-BB-2406-HK1782
