Description: This is a very rare and large Catholic devotional book, entitled “The Holy Rosary Illustrated: The Method of Saying The Rosary, with the Mysteries,” by Alphonsus Liguori, with illustrations by world-famous artists, published by The Catholic Art Publishing Company in Philadelphia, 1894. The book is 15”x12” and has a brightly gilded title surrounded by ornamental gilded wreath. Bound in light blue cloth with page edges gilded all around. The book consists of three different sections of mysteries: The Five Joyful Mysteries, The Five Sorrowful Mysteries, and The Five Glorious Mysteries. Each mystery has a page of prayer and a full page illustration devoted to it. The Mysteries and the meditation upon them through the Holy Rosary, or The Beads, was first written by Saint Alphonsus Liguori, the 18th century founder of the Catholic missionary order known as the Redemptorists. The order was founded in order to attend to the needs of the neglected townspeople in and around Naples, Italy, but soon spread across the globe; Liguori’smethods of prayer placed great emphasis on the recitation of the Rosary as a form of meditation, prayer, and salvation. This extremely rare book follows the Redemptorist method of reciting the Rosary through prayer. A very lavish book, meant for an esteemed position in the home, perhaps at a home altar where the worshipper would recite the mysteries with the book propped open before them. This rare book rarely comes up for sale, and would make a great addition to the library of any collector.
