Description: Sometimes the soil doesn’t stain, sometimes it paints. That is what happened with this opalized medicine from the 1890s standing 4 ¾” high and an inch in diameter. It is boldly embossed “VEGETABLE PULMONARY BALSAM”. This one was identified by the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906 to contain 18% alcohol and one and half grains of opium per fluid ounce. It was stated to cure all pulmonary affections and diseases of the lungs and chest. I’m fairly certain this medicine disappeared after 1906. The bottle is aqua and in dug condition, but the haze has opalized and when it is held to the light it glows in a rainbow of colors. There is a chip on the lip, but it too is opalized meaning it was chipped when it was discarded back in the late 1890s. There is no other damage. I love this bottle. The history makes it interesting, but the iridescence makes it exceptional.
