Description: Portrait of Marquis of Cinq-Mars Title: CINQ-MARS Etched by: Gaujean, after Dawant Issued: 1889 Boston Sheet Size: 6 x 9 in. (15 x 24 cm.) Paper: Wove, stiff paper Reverse side: Blank Printed in the late 19th century in Massachusetts, this genuine etching is over 120 years old. It is not a modern reproduction. This is a small black and white illustration of an oval portrait pendant. The subject is Henri Coiffier de Ruzé, Marquis of Cinq-Mars (1620-1642), a minion and reputed lover of King Louis XIII. The illustration was drawn by Albert Pierre Dawant (1852-1923), and etched by Eugene Gaujean (1850-1900), both French artisans. The etching was printed on cream colored, quality print stock with a smooth surface. The plate marks are visible. This print was carefully removed from a discard copy of Cinq-Mars, A Conspiracy Under Louis XIII, a limited edition of 200, printed in 1889.Condition: The illustration area is clean and flat with no marks or smudges. The edges are lightly browned and slighly wavy with age. This etching will frame up beautifully. Please note: The leading gallery picture has been cropped and enhanced to bring out the detail. The full page view is unaltered (though a bit dim from my scanner), and is the most accurate representation of the artwork.
