Description: I have here for sale both volumes of a book entitled REPORT ON THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE UNITED STATES EXPEDITION TO LADY FRANKLIN BAY, GRINNELL LAND by Adolphus W Greely, Vols I and II. Printed as papers for the House of Representatives by the Government Printing Office, Washington in 1888. 6 b/w plates, 11 b/w illustrations in the text and 3 maps and 3 charts. At the rear there is bound in an extra report by Winfield S Schley, Commander of the US Navy commanding the Greely Relief Expedition of 1884 and has a portrait of Schley. This was published in 1887 by the Government Printing Office of Washington.The Lady Franklin Bay Expedition of 1881–1884 (a.k.a. the Greely Expedition) to Lady Franklin Bay on Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic was led by Lieutenant Adolphus Greely, and was promoted by the United States Army Signal Corps. Its purpose was to establish a meteorological-observation station as part of the First International Polar Year, and to collect astronomical and magnetic data. During the expedition, two members of the crew reached a new Farthest North record, but of the original twenty-five men, only seven survived to return. Brown hardboards with gilt lettering to the spines. Pages sunned but clean.
