McPherson July 22nd, 1864, Army of Tennessee Engaged. Despite the implication of finality in its name, the battle occurred midway through the campaign, and the city did not fall until September 2, 1864, after a Union siege and various attempts to seize railroads and supply lines leading to Atlanta. (Background: artist Louis Kurz visited the scene of battlefields and camps to make pictorial representations. He drew what he saw and also what others told him they had seen. He became one of the first war correspondents, but used a canvas instead of words. From the sketches he made, Kurz later reproduced 36 as chromolithographs, together with noted engraver Andrew Allison.)
