Description: Hard to find single issue of the Boston journal for 16 December 1882 neatly extracted from an old damaged bound volume of the magazine. See photo for complete contents. 63 pages. Highlights of this issue I find include: Robert Louis Stevenson's article "A Gossip on Romance." Future English Poet Laureate Alfred Austin's "The Years of Italian Progress." Novelist W.E. Norris' serial novel (Part X) No New Thing. The novel was latter published in London in three book volumes (1883). An unsigned longer article on the motley forms of religion practiced in Egypt, headed "Egyptian Dervishes." English novelist Julia B. Chetwynd's "Sketches from the Dutch Seaside." "J. Landers" contributes (conclusion) "The Story of James Barker: A Tale of the Congo Coast." William Tweedie's "Baghdad on the Queen's Birthday." Another unsigned (back cover) article, reprinted from the now almost impossible to find St. James Gazette headed "[Poet and Churchman] George Herbert's Church." This descriptive of the still standing 17th century church where Herbert preached, then at this date being replaced nearby by a modern place of worship. Author identifications above are drawn from the Wellesley Index.
