Description: [EARLY METHODIST INTEREST] LIFE OF JOHN WILLIAM FLETCHER "Wesley's Designated Successor" FIRST PROOF SHEETS With Autograph Notes, Corrections,Additions and Omissions by Author Rev. Luke Tyerman London, 1882 [Methodism.] Wesley's Designated Successor: The Life, Letters, and Literary Labours of the Rev. John William Fletcher, Vicar of Madely, Shropshire. Luke Tyerman. Hodder and Stoughton, 27 Paternoster Row; London, 1882. First Proof Sheets: With Autograph Notes, Corrections, Additions and Omissions by the Author. Quarto. (App. 8.25 x 6 in.) Original binding with leather spine and corners, five raised bands, black morocco labels, gilt to spine and hand-marbled boards. Excellent condition. These proof sheets were prepared and printed by Hodder and Stoughton, then sent to Tyerman for his approval and review. These sheets ultimately served as a first draft, as the author subsequently proceeded to make a number of corrections to his own submitted text (including a new ending to the book). Originally retained by Hodder and Stoughton, these proof sheets were later passed to Hazel, Watson and Viney, another English printing firm that worked on a reprint of the text. The text contains an acquisition stamp from HWV that dates to the morning of October 8th, 1920. The text itself is a factual account of the life of Rev. John William Fletcher, who was born Jean Guillaume de la Fléchère in Switzerland in 1729. Fletcher emigrated to England in 1750 and there became an Anglican vicar. He attained prominence in regard to his early association with Methodism and was chosen by John Wesley to serve as his successor. F. W. Macdonald writes: "Mr. Tyerman's labours in the sphere of Methodist history and biography are too well known to require any word of commendation... It may be enough to say that he has made it impossible for any one to study the history of the great movement with which the names of Wesley, Whitefield, and Fletcher are associated, without having recourse to his volumes. There may be differences of opinion respecting Mr. Tyerman's judgments upon men and things; there can be none whatever as to his patient, laborious research, and perfect honesty in the use of his ample materials." One of a kind. _____________________________________ Items listed on eBay are merely representative of our broader inventory.
