Joseph Breck (1794-1873) was born outside Boston, Massachusetts, and established his business, Joseph Breck & Company, there in 1818. He acquired the New England Farmer, and later Horticultural Register and Gardens magazine. He also wrote The Flower Garden, a book about flower cultivation and shrubbery. He was one of the founding members of the American Seed Trade Association and a president of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society from 1859-1862. In 1840, Breck published his company’s first catalog, the New England Agricultural Warehouse and Seed Store Catalogue, to promote his company’s products. The company continued to grow as a garden and farm supply company. In the 1950s, Luther Adams “Bo” Breck, the fifth-generation Breck, transformed the family business into a Dutch bulb importer and flower bulb catalog company. The company is still in operation and is now the largest USA importer of Dutch tulip bulbs.
