Description: Around the World in the Yacht 'Sunbeam.' Our Home on the Ocean for Eleven Months. By Mrs. Brassey. With Illustrations. Chiefly after Drawings by the Hon. A. Y. Bingham. Published in New York in 1880 by Henry Holt and Company. Deemed by the "Wall Street Journal" as one of the five best books about female adventurers, "A Voyage in the Sunbeam" is a collection of Annie Brassey's journal entries of her voyage around the world with her family: husband (immensely wealthy liberal politician and peer), four children, 38 crew members, two dogs, three birds, and a "charming Persian kitten" (who disappeared early into the voyage) aboard a 157-foot steam-powered yacht. Starting at noon on July 1, 1876, they sailed from England and visited South America, the South Pacific, Asia, and the Middle East, returning back home on May 26, 1877. A best-seller in its day, with its descriptions of exotic locales and ship life, this book was even used as a textbook in the United States. The Brassey's were to take two further voyages. Sadly, on September 14, 1887 during the third voyage, Lady Brassey passed away on board ship, probably from malaria. Her body was committed to the deep that very same day . At the time they were off the coast of Australia. Condition: Sound binding. Top and bottom of spine chipped away and board tips rubbed through as pictured above. There is splitting to period chocolate brown endpapers over front hinge. Only a tiny bit to rear endpapers. (Both pictured above). Writing on front flyleaf as pictured above. Pages and plates are lightly toned, clean, tight and whole. Map is lightly toned and is in very good condition. The book measures 5 3/4" x 8 1/2" and has 479 pages.
