Description: STIFF BOARD WITH CORNER BUMPS. THIS IS AN ANNUAL PASS FOR THE YEAR 1875 THE WILLIAM HENRY VANDERBILT SIGNATURE IS VERY FADED. The signature represents his position as Vice President in 1875. This was two years prior to him becoming the president of the railroad as well as the richest person in the world. In 1877, Cornelius Vanderbilt died, passing over $100 million in wealth to William Henry ================================================================================================AS FOR THE PASS ITSELF: - The first line appears to read "Mr. William Lush". I did find an 1886 issue of The Railroad Gazette (p. 549) that has a William Lush resigning as Assistand Chief Engineer of the NYC & HRRR to become chief engineer of the St. Joseph & Grand Island Railroad on August 1, 1886. (PHOTO 5) WILLIAM HENRY VANDERBILT HIMSELF DIED IN 1885. - I think the second line filled in in darker ink suggests that the pass holder was an Engineer (Eng) for the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad (NYC & HRRR). I don't know what the first three letters of "Res" mean. That all works out.================================================================================================= THIS RAILROAD WAS CREATED AT THE END OF 1869, WHEN CORNELIUS VANDERBILT MERGED THE NEW YORK CENTRAL RAILROAD WITH THE HUDSON RIVER RAILROAD. FINDING AN ANNUAL PASS TO THIS RAILROAD WITH AN EARLIER DATE IS UNLIKELY. (PHOTO 4) identifies the person who was in possession of this card, and his first name was Murray. I don't know what the "F" stood for. I will include this note with the pass.
