Condition: Hardbound in prize leather binding with gilt and tooled spine and edges. All page edges gilt. Minor handling soil and light corner scuffing, but edges clean. Marbled end papers. Front and back covers are detached from the text block, but spine and text block are securely bound. Aside from the detached covers, the book is clean and unmarked and in VG condition. Information: A scarce and unusual popular astronomy from the later 19th century, featuring sections on the stars, planets, the sun and moon, asteroids, terrestrial effects like the aurora, astronomical laws and principles, and spectrum analysis. (See photos for complete table of contents). Some of the plates feature sketches of nebulae taken from observations by Herschel and Lord Rosse, and others are sketches of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.
