1868 - IMPEACHMENT of Andrew Johnson; Harpers Weekly prints - Thaddeus Stevens

Description: The Impeachment of Pres. Johnson 1868 This is a group of pages from the March 14, 1868 issue of Harper's Weekly, Americas leading illustrated paper during the 1800s, providing historic coverage of the dramatic impeachment of Gov. Andrew Johnson, following his tumultuous administration in the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln's assassination and the end of the Civil War three years earlier. Each sheet presents wood engravings of the drama, drawn by Theodore Davis, a staff artist and frequent contributor to Harper's. The group consists of two single-page sheets each measuring 11x16 inches in size, and an impressive double-page illustration which served as the issue's centerspread, measuring 16x22 inches. This centerfold will be shipped folded once, as originally published. The double-page print has five small pinholes down its center crease, where it was once stitched into the issue, yet these are scarcely noticeable (see photos). All three sheets show some age browning, but overall they remain in excellent overall condition and would make fine historical display pieces. The large centerspread engraving shows the an ornate Congressional chamber, with packed galleries, and the floor bustling with activity. Such important figures as Senators Thaddeus Stevens and Ben Butler are clearly shown. The scene by Davis is titled: INTERIOR OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AT WASHINGTON THE HOUSE IN SESSION. One of the single sheets was the title-page of the March 14 issue. Below the Harper's masthead, the scene shown is described as: IMPEACHMENT THADDEUS STEVENS AND JOHN BINGHAM BEFORE THE SENATE. The other single sheet presents four scenes, interspersed with text, which are captioned: * Impeachment The Guard Before the War Office. * Impeachment Examination of General Thomas. * Impeachment General Thomas Demanding the War Office of Secretary Stanton. * Impeachment The Impeachment Committee Preparing the Indictment. This final scene identifies the seven members of the Impeachment Committee which it shows as: Hamilton Ward; Thaddeus Stevens; James F. Wilson; John A. Logan; George Boutwell; George Julian; and John Bingham. The paper included a long article on the impeachment proceedings, with that text starting on the back side of the title-page, and finishing on the page with the 4 separate engravings. What makes the sheet interesting is the political cartoon it presents, making fun of a Chinese immigrant who is objecting to possibly being drafted during the Civil War. It portrays him as a caricature speaking in very broken English, saying that he'll take up the issue with his own government. Below the heading of ANOTHER DIPLOMATIC MESS, the caption identifies him as JOHN CHINAMAN, saying: Me Merikan Man you no draftee me you Draftee me, me appeal to my Government. My Government be Much Mad! The cartoon measures 4.5 x 5 inches on the larger partial page. _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
